We firmly believe in having good quality kitchen gadgets and appliances that will last a good long while. Gadgets that are reliable and always get the job done with ease and efficiency. The best vegetable peelers accomplish this for years on end along with easy clean up.

Why Do You Need A Good Vegetable Peeler To Use An Air Fryer?

Well, technically, you don’t. That is, unless you have vegetables you want to air fry that require peeling.

Whether you have an air fryer or not, a good vegetable peeler is an indispensable tool in the kitchen. But some are far better than others. Here, we’ll cover the best vegetable peelers currently on the market that are also easily found on Amazon.

Types Of Vegetable Peelers

We would be remiss if we didn’t talk about the types of peelers available. There is quite a variety of them on the market, and each one has a different use or benefit. So lets jump in.

Straight Peelers

These peelers are the old fashion type of peeler that many of us grew up with. They are well intentioned, but they tend to be a bit clumsy overall. However, that’s not to say they don’t have their place. Many folks enjoy these, and there’s no reason to not use one if that’s what you have on hand.

Is This Vegetable Peeler Comfortable?

There is nothing worse than having a lot of vegetables to peel and having a peeler that leaves your hand or wrist sore half way through. So how do you avoid that?

We have found that a wide, soft grip is critical. Thin, metal vegetable peelers just don’t measure up and often leave your hand and wrist tired or even sore. A wide handle with a soft rubber or plastic covering will solve that almost instantly. For that, we recommend this peeler.

Reasons To Like This Peeler

  • Soft, extra large handle for easy, non-slip, comfortable grip.
  • Potato eye remover on tip
  • Swivel blade
  • Hole in handle for easy hanging storage
  • Company guarantee

The Best Vegetable Peelers Are Comfortable And Efficient

Beyond grip, another thing to consider is how well a vegetable peeler peels. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out that the blade needs to be sharp. But beyond that, the style of peeler makes a big difference in how easy it is to use.

Y Peelers

The above peeler is a basic peeler. It gets the job done with comfort. But it also only peels in one direction, though it’s suitable for switching hands with its two sided blade.

If you really want the blade to easily glide through the vegetable skin and over the sometimes complicate curves of your vegetables, we have found that Y-shaped peelers are far more efficient. Not only because of their shape, but because you can peel in either direction. This makes quick work of anything you need to peel.

The Best Vegetable Peelers Are Both Comfortable And Efficient

The above two recommendations are perfectly good choices. They are also great if you are looking for a particular aspect or feature that is stellar on a vegetable peeler. Neither choice is wrong. However, what if you want both comfort AND ease of use?

Should You Get A Straight Peeler Or A Y Peeler?

We are definitely partial to the Y peeler around here. The right Y peeler has a good, comfortable grip and makes really quick work of getting your vegetables peeled. It peels both backwards and forwards, and is pretty affordable, regardless of the brand you purchase.

Other Types Of Peelers

Serrated Straight Peelers

Serrated peelers can be either straight or Y shaped. A basic serrated peeler is just like a straight peeler, but with serrated blade.

These types of peelers have much better “grab” than a straight blade. They easily pierce soft skins (like peaches) and peel them off smoothly with very little waste of actual fruit.

Why This Peeler?

  • The handle on this peeler is pretty comfortable
  • It’s dishwasher safe
  • Has a hole in the handle for hanging storage.
  • Makes quick work of peeling soft skinned fruits or vegetables

Julienne Peelers

Julienne peelers are fantastic for very specific purposes.

  1. They are great for creating non-lettuce salads. Just think thin strips of cucumber and other vegetables, tossed in a bowl for salad.
  2. With the proper blade, a Julienne peeler makes quick work of creating vegetable noodles.
  3. You can easily add thin strips of vegetables to things like wraps and stir fry. You can even make a quick pickled vegetable using a Julienne peeler.

Why Is This A Good Peeler?

  • It has a Japanese, stainless steel blade
  • It’s small for easy storage
  • The non-slip handle is wide enough to be comfortable.

Double-Sided Peelers

In theory, the double sided peeler is supposed to be two peelers in one. But, in general, they kinda missed the mark with this one, in our opinion.

The Down Side?

  • Hand wash only
  • Serrated blades can be tough on your sponges
  • A bit more clumsy to use than a single bladed peeler

  • Rust proof steel
  • Hole in handle for easy hanging storage
  • It’s a Y peeler, which means it will be more efficient

Another Option?

A less clumsy version of the double sided peeler is this one. It’s far easier to work with as well as to clean.

What Air Fryer Foods Can I Use A Vegetable Peeler For?

Just to name a few…

  • Winter squash
  • Summer squash
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Apples
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Celery root
  • Kohlrabi
  • Parsnips
  • Rutabagas

Conclusion On The Best Vegetable Peelers

The best vegetable peelers are the ones that have a comfortable grip and get the job done quickly and efficiently. While there are many on the market, not all peelers are created equal.

A good Y peeler will last your for years and make peeling vegetables easier.

A good Julienne peeler (in addition to a Y peeler), will round out your collection and give you many more ways to peel your fruits and vegetables. While you wouldn’t need this specifically for foods you air fry, it’s a great way to affordably round out your collection. Plus, you can always julienne some fresh fruits or veggies to garnish your air fried foods with!

For example, air fry a chicken breast while you julienne some fresh veggies to create a delicious, chicken salad.

The double bladed peeler is more of a waste of time, depending on which one you get.

A straight peeler can be comfortable and get the job done, but it can only peel one way and is a bit more cumbersome than a Y peeler.

All in all, we recommend having both a Y peeler as well as a Julienne peeler in your kitchen gadget collection.
