How Many Calories In A Hot Turkey Sandwich?

The truth is, it will all depend on the ingredients you use to make such a sandwich. Everything from the cheese or turkey to the bread you use can change the calories. But in general, for a simple sandwich like the one below, it will be about 400 calories on average. Note that this is not accurate for a sandwich you purchase pre-made. This is for a homemade version like below. And if you add gravy, the calories will really add up.

Air Fryer Sandwich Trick

One big tip for making hot sandwiches in an air fryer is to butter the INSIDE of your sandwich. This will keep moisture in the bread and will give it a nice crispy texture instead of simply drying out the bread. Butter should be your first layer in building any hot sandwich you plan to cook in an air fryer. After that, you’ll want to spritz the OUTSIDE of the sandwich with an oil sprayer. A very light mist is all that is needed to give your bread that delicately crispy texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices sandwich bread
  • 4 slices butter
  • 1 tsp. minced, fresh parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 slices mild cheddar cheese
  • 3 slices deli turkey
  • oil in an oil sprayer

  • Lay out your sandwich bread on your work surface.
  • Lay your butter slices over your bread. *Note: we used a cheese slicer and cut over the long side of the butter.
  • Sprinkle on the parsley and garlic powder equally over each slice of bread.
  • Lay down a slice of cheddar on each slice of bread.
  • Place the turkey on one slice.
  • Close the sandwich.
  • Spray the top of the bread with a light coat of oil using an oil sprayer. This will keep the bread from drying out.
  • Flip the sandwich and place it on your air fryer try or in the basket. Give the top side of the sandwich a quick spritz of oil as well.
  • Bake at 400 F. for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted. Remove from air fryer, cut the sandwich in half and serve.

CHEESE SLICER

If you need a good cheese slicer, this is also what we use to slice our butter for use in air fryer sandwiches. It slices very evenly and gives you thin, unbroken slices of butter to put inside your sandwich.

Air Fryer Sandwich Tips

Air fryer sandwiches are warm and delicious if made correctly. Here are some tips.

  • Never be afraid to add seasoning to your hot sandwiches. Garlic powder, salt, pepper, even onion powder or fresh herbs (depending on what you put in your sandwich) can be wonderful additions and will add tons of flavor.
  • You’ll want to flip this sandwich half way through the cooking time. Don’t skip this step or one side will be very toasty and the other won’t have any toast at all.
  • Remember, as we said above, butter the inside and spritz the outside with light oil. It adds a few calories, but you’ll be far happier with the outcome. This applies to almost any sandwich you make in an air fryer. Not just this recipe.
  • Note that on some older models of air fryers, the top slice of bread can be blown off the sandwich during cooking. If this is your issue, simply add some toothpicks to your sandwich to hold the top slice down. Newer models won’t do this.
  • For added flavor, instead of spritzing the bread with oil, you can spread a light coat of mayonnaise over the bread. However, if you choose this, we recommend only adding mayo to the bottom slice AFTER you have flipped the sandwich. Otherwise, it’ll all just drip off during cooking.
  • Remember that your cooking time may vary, depending on the air fryer you have. Each appliance is different, so adjust the cooking time as needed. Cook on each side, long enough to get each slice of bread toasty.
  • If you are using gravy, wait until after you have cooked your sandwich to add the gravy. You can cook this open faced if you prefer that for your gravy. Just put the cheese over the turkey in this case, so that it can melt well onto the turkey.
