Everyone loves air fryer pizza rolls! They are relatively quick to make with minimal ingredients (you can add as many or as few toppings as you like!), and nobody will turn them down.

This recipe uses puff pastry dough we purchased at the store. But you can also make your own dough if you prefer. We just like the light, flakey texture that store-bought puff pastry dough provides.

Cook Pizza Rolls In An Air Fryer

Traditionally, whether you make them from scratch or purchase them frozen at the store, pizza rolls are baked in a conventional oven.

But with the dawn of the air fryer, that all changed. We would venture a guess that most pizza rolls will taste even better out of an air fryer because there is that little bit of air-fried crispiness that you don’t always get from a conventional oven unless you slightly over bake things. And who wants overcooked pizza rolls? Not us!

Air fryers were made for foods like pizza rolls, and with this recipe, you’ll see we’re right.

How To Cook Frozen Pizza Rolls In An Air Fryer

Should you decide to purchase the frozen pizza rolls found in the grocery store freezer section, here’s how you can cook those.

  • Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees.
  • Place the frozen pizza rolls in a single layer on the bottom of your air fryer basket or on your air fryer shelf.
  • Set your cook time for 6 minutes. If you have a toaster-oven style air fryer, you’ll need to turn the pizza rolls over half way through. If you have the basket style air fryer, you can simply shake the basket a bit at the 3 minute mark.
  • Cool slightly and serve with your favorite dip. (We like ranch!)

Need An Air Fryer?

We can’t recommend this one enough! We are seriously in love with this air fryer and use it on a daily basis around here! Want to know more about it? Read our Instant Vortex Pro Review here.

Our Favorite Pizza Roll Ingredients

While not every item can be purchased from Amazon (unless you are in an area that has grocery delivery), the brands we like best on amazon are listed below. Were were not paid to promote these items. These are honestly the ingredients we use and love.

All purpose flour sold on Amazon. (Affiliate Link)

King Arthur Flour All-Purpose Flour, 10 Pound

While you won’t be making the dough from scratch with this recipe, you’ll definitely want a well floured work surface to better handle your pastry puff dough. We love King Arthurs flour. Their flour is always good quality and hasn’t failed us yet.

Rao's homemade pizza sauce, sold on Amazon. (Affiliate link) This is our favorite sauce for making Air Fryer Pizza Rolls.

Rao’s Homemade Pizza Sauce 13 oz

Half of a good pizza is a good sauce. And while Roa’s can be a little on the pricier side, we find that the flavor of their sauce is worth the few extra pennies. The resulting pizza made with this sauce is always good. It’s a classic sauce with a wonderful balance of flavors. Perfect for any toppings you’d like to add!

Canned Lindsay olives sold on Amazon. (affiliate link)

Lindsay Black Pearl Olives, Sliced, 2.25 Oz

Contrary to popular believe, not all black olives are created equal. Especially when they are canned. We have tried several brands over the years and keep coming back to Linsay’s. We’ve never opened the can to find mushy olives. They are always firm and tender. The perfect olive texture, particularly for pizza!

Note that you will most likely want to use parchment paper in your air fryer for recipes like this. It makes cleanup a breeze and keeps some ingredients from escaping through the holes of your basket or tray. You can use your own and cut a few, small holes in the parchment for air flow, or you can purchase pre-cut parchment paper.

If you choose not to use parchment, make sure you have a drip tray underneath. Basket air fryers have this by default. But for toaster-oven style air fryers, you won’t want to forget that drip tray!

Here are two types you can purchase, depending on what type of air fryer you have (basket style or toaster oven style).

Fresh Or Frozen Puff Pastry Dough?

If you aren’t sure which one to get, the correct answer is… either one! Both will work fine here. However, it’s worth mentioning that if you use fresh pastry dough, you may have to reduce the cooking time a bit. Keep an eye on the first batch to be sure. But we promise, it’s the best pizza dough ever!

Can You Cook Frozen Pizza Rolls Mad With Puff Pastry Dough?

Yup! Just take them out of the freezer and pop them directly into your air fryer. Set the temperature to 350 F. and cook for about 10 minutes. (Times can vary from appliance to appliance. So keep a close eye on them the first time you do this.)

Air Fryer Pizza Pockets

If you are worried about the mess that these types of air fryer pizza rolls can create, you can always make pizza pickets instead. It’s very much like making ravioli.

Lay your puff pastry out on a well floured surface and use a knife or pizza wheel to cut the dough into 8 equal rectangles. (1 cut down the middle going the long way, and 3 cuts in equal spacing down the short way.)

Spoon a small amount of sauce onto the bottom half of each rectangle, add your toppings and cheese and then fold the top of the rectangle down over the bottom. Use a fork to pinch the edges together like a pop tart.

This method works really well and will contain any mess you might encounter otherwise. This method is a smart move if you are feeding kids!

What Dip Can You Serve These With?

We recommend ranch dressing. It’s the best! But any dipping sauce you prefer will work. A garlic sauce would be quite tasty!

Recipe Variations

Most air fryer recipes tend to be pretty versatile, and these are no exception. Here are some variations you can try.

  • Add pepperoni or chopped ham.
  • Add extra mozzarella cheese, or switch up the type of cheese you use. Cheddar cheese would be tasty!
  • Add some chopped bell peppers or any other favorite pizza toppings.

The Ingredients

  • 4 oz. sliced mushrooms
  • 1 cup chopped red onions
  • 1 tbsp. oil
  • 1 container puff pastry dough – thawed in the fridge for 2-3 hours if frozen.
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 ½ cups pizza sauce – or as needed for coverage.
  • 6 medium garlic cloves
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 3 oz. can sliced black olives

How To Make Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

Mushrooms and onions sautéing in a black skillet.

In a large skillet, sauté the mushrooms and onions in the oil until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are fully wilted. Add in the minced garlic in the last minute of cooking, stirring constantly to keep it from burning. Set aside to cool.

Puff pastry rolled out on a piece of floured parchment paper in preparation for making Air Fryer Pizza Rolls.

Flour your work surface with the flour, and unroll the puff pastry onto it. Work it over a bit to flatten it out to prepare the surface for the toppings. You can do all of this on a large piece of parchment paper if you have any issues with the stickiness. This will help you roll everything up at the end, but it’s not necessary if you are used to working with pastry dough and know how to handle it. You may or may not use all of the flour. But it’s important to have enough of it on hand to keep the dough from sticking to your surface.

Spread the sauce over the entire surface, except for the top inch or so. You want to leave a lip that will stick well to hold the pastry together after you roll it.

Add any meat you want to use and finally the shredded cheese, leaving that lip at the top of the dough uncovered and clean.

The rolled up pizza roll.

Roll up the dough as tightly as you can. Here we used parchment paper to help roll it, but if your surface is well floured, you won’t need that. Roll it as tightly as you can, and press the end lip into the dough by rolling the roll over onto it and letting it rest there.

The parchment-lined air fryer tray.

Line your air fryer tray or basket with parchment paper, and poke little holes in the bottom for air flow. Make sure they are small holes so your sauce doesn’t drip through. That would defeat the purpose of the parchment paper.

If you want them more round, place them on the cut side.

Bake in the air fryer at 325 F. for 10 minutes. (Note that every air fryer is different. Start checking your first batch at the 6 minute mark, and every minute thereafter. Your air fryer may not need to cook these for as long. Or, it may need to cook longer!) Flip them over and cook for an additional 10 minutes for a total of 20 minutes cooking time. Remove from the air fryer and cool a bit before serving.

How To Store Leftovers

If you have leftovers (we’ll be shocked!), you can store them in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Can You Freeze Air Fryer Pizza Rolls?

Yes, absolutely! Once they are cooked, make sure to cool them completely before storing them in an air-tight, freezer-safe container. They will last in the freezer for up to 2 months. (Don’t forget to put a date on your container!)

Reheating Air Fryer Pizza Rolls

We recommend reheating these in an air fryer. A microwave tends to make these too rubbery. Simply reheat at 300 degrees F. for approximately 1-3 minutes.
